When we tell a customer we clean mattresses, a good number of them pause and ask if that is even a thing. It is. And it is one of the jobs that surprises people most, usually the moment they see the water that comes back out.
Yes, a mattress can actually be cleaned
You wash the sheets, rotate it now and then, maybe run a vacuum over the top. For most people that is the entire routine, because nobody advertises mattress cleaning the way they advertise carpet cleaning. So the question we hear most is a fair one: can a mattress really be professionally cleaned, and does it make any difference?
Both answers are yes. A mattress holds years of what your body leaves behind, and a vacuum never reaches it. Getting it out takes the same method we use on carpet, adapted for something you sleep on.
What the process actually is
We use hot water extraction, what most people call steam cleaning. A truckmount unit sits out at the curb and does the heavy lifting. High-temperature water goes into the mattress under pressure, then strong suction pulls it straight back out.
That combination of heat, pressure, and suction is the whole point. Surface fabric is only the top layer. The sweat, oils, and dust mite debris that matter have worked down past it, and a household vacuum or a spray bottle stops at the surface. The truckmount drives past it and draws the loosened soil back through the hose, so it leaves the house instead of getting pushed deeper in.
We manage the moisture on the way out too, because a mattress left damp is worse off than one nobody touched. The extraction pulls most of the water back along with the dirt, and the mattress dries within hours.
What it clears out of the mattress
Every night the mattress takes on sweat, body oils, and dead skin, and that becomes a food source for dust mites living in the fabric. Add the spills, the sick kid, the pet that treats the bed as its own, and it builds up fast. We wrote a whole piece on what accumulates inside a mattress if you want the full picture.
The clean pulls out much of that trapped load. Most people notice the difference in how the bed smells and in how they sleep on it. We stay honest about it: this removes a lot of what is in there, and for most homes that is the gap between a bed that feels stale and one that feels fresh again.
The hard case is urine that soaked in
The job we get called for most is the one people are a little embarrassed about. A potty-training accident, an older family member, a pet. Urine works differently from a surface spill. It soaks through the fabric into the internal layers, and by the time it dries, the smell is coming from deep inside the mattress where wiping never reaches.
This is where the truckmount earns its keep. The heat and flushing action get down to the layers a rag cannot touch, and we pre-treat with an enzyme made for that kind of accident. In many cases we save a mattress the owner had already written off.
Here is the honest limit. If a stain soaked in long ago and set, it can stay visible even after the mattress is genuinely clean. Clean and stain-free are two separate things. We would rather say so up front than surprise you, so we test a sample area on arrival and you see the real result before we run the whole job.
How often it is worth doing
For most homes, once or twice a year keeps a mattress in good shape. Some situations call for more:
- Little kids who have accidents or climb in sick.
- Pets that sleep on the bed.
- Heavy sweating, which the South Florida heat does no favors for.
In those homes, two to three times a year makes sense. And the mattress is only part of it. We clean every size, from twin up to king, along with the headboard and bed frame, since the whole sleeping setup collects the same dust and grime.

Frequently asked questions
Can a mattress really be professionally cleaned?
Yes. We use hot water extraction, the same steam cleaning method we run on carpet, adapted for a mattress. A truckmount pushes hot water in under pressure and pulls it back out with the dirt, reaching the sweat, oils, and dust mite debris that a vacuum leaves behind.
Does professional mattress cleaning actually make a difference?
For most homes, yes. The clean pulls out much of the trapped load that has settled below the surface, and the difference in how the bed smells and feels is usually easy to notice. We stay honest about what a clean can and cannot do before we start.
How often should a mattress be cleaned?
Once or twice a year keeps most mattresses in good shape. Homes with little kids, pets on the bed, or heavy sweating are better off with two to three times a year.
Can you get urine out of a mattress?
Often, yes. Urine soaks into the internal layers, so we pre-treat with an enzyme and use the truckmount's heat and flushing action to reach deeper than wiping ever could. If an old stain has set, it can stay visible even after the mattress is genuinely clean, and we will tell you that at the sample stage.
What sizes do you clean, and do you clean the frame too?
Every size, from twin up to king. We also clean the headboard and bed frame, since the whole sleeping setup collects the same dust and grime.
